Deben is situated about 20 km north-west of Kathu.  It straddles the dry Gamagara River.

The name means "first drinking-place" in seTswana.

The town has two distinct histories: As a Thlaro region before 1900, and as a white town after 1912.

The town has very strong Dutch Reformed roots, as the congregations at Kuruman, Kathu and Olifantshoek all seceded from the original congregation at Dibeng. It has a hiking trail.
