The 1914 Afrikaner Rebellion

The Truce Tree

During the , General J Kemp and 1200 rebels invaded Kuruman to replenish their rations. Captain Frylinck and Lieutenant Gash were responsible for the safety of Kuruman, and after a short skirmish, the rebels surrendered. An armistice was negotiated beneath this shady camelthorn tree: “The treaty guaranteed the safety of the government forces in return for a free passage through Kuruman."

The rebels were also allowed to replenish their supplies. This camel thorn tree stands proud on the side of Seodin Road and holds history under its branches”.[1]The site has been attractively landscaped with a memorial stone and historical plaques.

Corner of Seodin Road and Ochre Street, Kuruman.
